Abstract

Background: Emergency department (ED) as one of the most important units of hospital plays an important role in providing care. Generally, the most serious cases refer to emergency department and highest number of patients admitted to the ED of the hospital. Aim of this study is to have a comprehensive estimate of the number of frequent visitors to the ED of Sari Imam Khomeini educational hospital.

Material and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was done retrospectively by referring to the medical files kept at the Sari Imam Khomeini education hospital. The patient's record was admitted to the ED were obtained and the files of the frequent users in 2017 were investigated. Description and analysis of the data performed using SPSS 21.

Results: The number of emergency cases in the Sari Imam Khomeini Hospital in 2017 was 29765, of them, 594 (6.2%) were repeated cases that were studied. The mean age range was 56.17 years. The most common complaint has been the weakness and lethargy in 39.9%, abdominal pain in 30 %, then shortness of breath and the other causes, each one in 14%. The most common underlying diseases orderly were of anemia and obstruction pulmonary disease.

Conclusions: The sum of the obtained data with detailed are presented in order to apply the evidence-based correct planning of policies, and it is necessary for allocating the various sections of the emergency and management of a new patient admissions, new policies be adopted and better decision for non-emergency patients and outpatient admission be implemented by authorities.
